San Pedro del Pinatar to host the Ice Hockey World Under 20 in 2012 at the new feature Olympic Ice Track. The "Ice Palace" will feature an Olympic track 2,300 square meters, where you can practice sports like ice hockey or figure skating, a grandstand with more than 1,000 locations, and a curling rink addition by 608 square meters .
The privately financed project will include a 500,000 euro grant from the Higher Sports Council, and will bring investment in the town and create about 200 jobs in the construction and operation of the Olympic Ice Rink.
It´s anticipated that more than 100 annual competitions will be taking place in the Ice Palace, which is excellent news for locals, as ice Hockey is such an exciting and stimulating spectator sport. It will also have a curling rink of 608 square metres and tiered seating for 1000 spectators.
The actual Ice Palace will be situated in the Barrio de Los Antolinos within the area of the Ciudad Deportiva and will also have a commercial shopping gallery and its own parking. Planning conditions including building several tennis courts and sports centre within the municipality, and that a specified number of fixed free hours be allocated in the facilities for municipal sports events to take place.
It´s anticipated that the Ice Palace will attract 600,000 users a year, given the position of San Pedro, which is split down the middle, half of it being in Murcia, the other half in Alicante, which gives it a possible residential audience of 2.5 million residents within easy driving distance.
I t is hoped the build will start in March and take 18 months to complete
